What case sizes are a good fit for the kraken, antennas, pi, and the usual bits?
I’d appreciate any pictures.
We are offering something that may suit your needs.
There is another thread that has photos of storage.
I used the apache 2800 case from harbor freight.
I used an Apache 3800 for mine but I kept the Kraken packing foam and picked out the foam needed to hold those pieces. I hope the image upload worked.
The Apache 3800 looks great. Thanks for the post and pictures. I’m off to Harbor Freight to purchase.
I think the big help was one of my mentors recommended keeping the original KRAKEN packing foam.
Great idea on keeping the original packing. No sense in reinventing the wheel when the packing is pretty much custom design. I have a 2800 that I was hoping to use, but the 3800 is a more elegant layout and set up. Thanks.
I also had a 2800 that I wanted to use… I couldn’t make it work so I tried an existing 3800 and it was perfect so I bought another to dedicate to it! My 2800 now holds my Anritsu LMR master.
I need to find a source for the foam insert only…. Wonder if HF sells it separate online.
Now think it, I’m going to use my 2800 to store my Comet Antenna Analyzer, cables, spare AA batteries, and charger.
Not sure if HF has extra foam kit available.
I ended up putting the whole rig in a tripod bag. I used the Arrow base antenna array minus some bits and plus my antennas, which I modified into an array that folds out in seconds, and centers on the existing NMO mount on my roof.
This case is 18" wide, 12" deep and 6" high.
Monitor is bolted to the lid, and the hinged keyboard shelf folds down for use.
The pocket holder came with the case, and is fastened to the bottom of the keyboard shelf. The antennas all fit into the pockets for transport.
Do you have any trouble with the Pi overheating?
I bought the Pi case and CPU fan, and so far temps seem stable. I did mount both the Pi and the Kraken 3/4" off the bottom of the case to allow full air circulation, and if after heavy use things do get hot, I’m prepared to get out a hole saw and ventilate the case!
My install in a Harbor Freight Apache 3800 case. Still have some more work to do, but makes for a cleaner setup in a car. Might add a fan to the case itself with venting to allow it to operate with the lid closed, the components got a little warm during a 90 min test with the lid closed. Or, I’ll just keep it open.
I really like the bulkhead SMA connectors and jumper cables! I may do that to mine.
Love seeing all these builds… I did the bulkhead thing with the short cables myself… I was afraid that they would induce some issues but they really seem to be working out well. I have been using it to hunt down malfunctioning public safety 700/800 signal boosters and it really really works well!
My next addition to my case will be a second Pi running Airspy SpyServer with a separate SDR so that I can “view the spectrum” without dragging out my Anritsu and all that… I like the SDR view and I like SpyServer… if only there was a better app for it… PC it is.
