It is not necessary, you can and we do recommend using a circular array even in a fixed site setup.
If you want to use a linear array, yes you would be best to specify the direction if you know that you will only be monitoring in one direction.

You can define an orthogonal direction as forward, and whatever heading the orthogonal is pointing to is your forward heading.
