I’d like to run the KrakenSDR image on a Pi 5, but instead of loading the image onto a MicroSD card, I’d like to load it onto a removable NVME SSD. The Pi 5 would have a PCIe X4 hat allowing data to flow from the removable SSD through the hat, and to the Pi 5’s PCIe port. I would also have to change the image boot order to boot from the SSD first, not the SD card.
My understanding was USB-boot couldn’t be used because it would cause an overall data loss from the SDR itself; would that still apply to the Pi 5’s PCIe slot? Has anyone tried this before?
I’m not aware of anyone whose tried this before. As long as the NVME slot doesn’t share bandwidth with the USB, then I see no reason why it wouldn’t work well.
I’ve got that exact config working for my Pi 5, and it’s amazing. Super fast boot times!
I’m currently using the Argon Neo 5, with a WD Black 1TB M.2 NVME SSD, with my Pi 5.
For me it worked first time, I just flashed the SSD directly from the Pi Imager with the kraken image, then it booted right away. Just make sure the Micro SD card is removed.
