Raspberry Pi 5 images?

I have tried 2 different images for the Rpi5 (March and June) and no boot - nothing at all. I have verified the Pi and the card is good with a different image, am I missing something?

Just tested the Pi 5 images and they boot fine.

What model Pi 5 do you have?

Does anything show up in the console if you connect a monitor?

Nothing on the console, Pi led stays green. When I load an image from the Raspberry Pi site, it loads. I tried the Raspberry Pi image app, WinImage32, and BalenaEtcher.

Very strange… I’ll try from a different computer, not sure what to try next!

I’ve tried 3 different computers (two Win11, one RaspberyyPi OS), 3 different brands of SD cards - no go. Images from the Raspberri Pi site work fine. I imaged using the imager app ON the raspberry pi to an SD card on the USB slot, no joy. I have spent hours trying different combinations. You’re SURE the Pi5 June image as posted here works?

I have an older Rp5 at home, I am going to try on that one next. Will not boot on 2 different Pi’s I bought on Mouser. Nothing on HDMI output, LED turns green then stays solid green.

Try to launch BalenaEtcher from the menu, not from the short cut on the desktop. The transfer to the SD Card was always failing from the desktop but was successful from the menu on windows 10

So, tried the SD card on an older RPi5 I had at home and it boots.

It doesn’t boot on 2 brand new RPi5’s from Mouser, but they boot Raspberry Pi OS just fine.

Did something change recently with the RPi5?

Got the KrakenSDR up and running on my older RPi5, initial testing went well! I re-tested on 3 RPi5’s purchased from Mouser at the same time as the Kraken, none of them will boot with the same SD that works in my older Pi. They all boot the current Raspberry Pi OS, so they are not DOA.

Something is amiss!

Looks like there is a recently released Pi 5 rev 1.1, is that what you have?

Though I’m surprised it won’t boot. The whole point of the Pi 5 is stability, so it’s very odd there are variations that would cause images to not work.

I’d buy one but it seems there is no information from Pi Foundation about the updates yet, so I’m not sure if it’s guaranteed that i’d get one if I ordered now.

How much RAM is on your unit BTW?

The 3 new ones are 2G: Mouser #: 358-SC1110, Mfr. #:SC1110

The one that works I am not sure on the memory, could be 4G, I’ll have to check. Is there any visual way to check if they are v1.1?

The 2GB ones are different but according to Raspberry Pi 5’s new 2GB model benchmarked: Do you need 2, 4 or 8GB? : We test against the 4 and 8GB versions | Tom's Hardware

The SoC (System on Chip) has been updated, and according to Raspberry Pi co-founder and CEO Eben Upton this is a new cost-optimized variant of the BCM2712 (BCM2712D0) "which removes all the non-Raspberry Pi-specific logic from the chip. But from the user’s perspective it’s functionally identical.

So the image being incompatible is very odd. I’ll buy a 2GB model to test with.

Ah looks like the new Pi 5 2GB model needs the kernel on images updated for it it work. I see that some other companies providing images for their users have come across this problem too.

Once I get the 2GB model I’ll see how to update the kernel.

I am willing to test with the ones I have, if you create a build with the new kernel. I’d prefer to use one of them for this anyway.

I have maybe a very stupid question, but can the RSP5 problem have a problem like this…
I have a RSP5 4G, and everything was almost working, when key in frequency, the “center frequency” never change.
But when changing to RSP4, its working as it should…
what you think?

By the way, im using RSP4 right now…that is working fine.

Just uploaded a new image to File folder on MEGA and KrakenSDR Images - Google Drive. Dated 30 October 2024. Please check if this works for you.

This sounds more like the Kraken wasn’t receiving sufficient power. Strange things like that happen when it’s power constrained. And with the Pi 5 drawing significantly more power, any supply you were using might have been constrained.

That is most likely like that, i will fix better power. Thanks.

Works! I don’t have my mini HDMI cable right now, but it booted (green LED flickered during boot process), I was able to attach via WiFi and bring up a terminal and issue a shutdown command, so it works a LOT better. Thanks!

Sounds similar to whats going on here. Pi5 with october image, no problems flashing. I get a ton of I/O errors on mmcblk0 when a busybox 1.1.35.0 prompt.
