Pre-purchase questions

Hey all, looking into jumping into the KrakenSDR field, having never done anything in this space before, so hoping the nexus of fantastic minds here might be able to help?!

Static position & Baofeng radios

I’m interested in purchasing for use at university for when we send some of the students out into the field with baofeng radios to survey sites. Yes they have mobiles and we can ask them exactly where they are but I wanted to know if I set up a static position such as in the car park and they wander off, then they start to radio back in at distances from 100m away to a few kms am I going to see the blips on the map / tracker indicating roughly the direction they are in? Be interesting to be able to map their blips walking back to the bus and see if they’re following tracks or going off track.

Mapping distance

With the app / mapping you get, does it provide a distance from your position to where the blips are? Such as in above scenario, I could see either roughly or accurately their distance from my location?

MHz tracking

Am I right in thinking that you can only track one frequency at a time and not put in any small range? i.e. if each baofeng was using a different frequency I can track all or I’d only be able to input and track one specific freq at a time?

Thanks very much for any and all help! Really interested in seeing how we can use this and have some fun teaching about it too.

To determine a position you’d need at least 3 networked KrakenSDRs surrounding the area you want to monitor.

A single KrakenSDR will only give you a bearing, and can’t give you any information about distance.

You can track multiple VFOs at the same time, as long as they are all within the 2.4 MHz max bandwidth limitation of the KrakenSDR.
