Hi! i’m trying to use KrakenSDR for radio astronomy project. i’m new to radio.
The problem is, there are several high power transmitter nearby within the range of 1-5 kilometers (FM, DVB, etc.) and i need to use LNA to be able to observe the weak signal from outer space. I’m afraid using LNA will damage the SDR.
I already use Notch filter in other SDR without LNA, but it doesn’t provide enough attenuation.
How can i use LNA safely? any other recommendation regarding my case?
What frequency are you operating on?
There’s no real way around this for radio astronomy other than to have a really good filter, and a good directional antenna that will null any terrestrial signals. Of course you will need to point the directional antenna at a high elevation to avoid terrestrial interference.
For the filter, they will need to be designed precisely, so that each filter is near identical to each other, otherwise phase the phase can be distorted by the filters relative to each channel.
