I am looking for DF gear that can work with 800MHz, P25 uplink data - usually pretty short bursts, maybe 50-100ms? I have done it with a continuous train about one a second to DF using a Yagi and an SDR waterfall display, but this is still difficult. Can the Kraken work with short bursts? Anyone have experience using it on P25 uplinks?
Thanks!
Steve
Kraken can work with short bursts, but the signal will appear weaker with short bursts, so you’ll need good signal strength in the first place.
Remember when you use your Yagi you have significantly more gain when compared to the omni antennas that Kraken uses.
Are all the bursts are all on the same frequency?
Yes, it would all be on the same frequency. These are P25 Uplink packets (ISP) . The other requirement would be a selectable gate, or the ability to turn acquisition on and off and retain the calculated bearings between turning it on and off.
The use case is locating a P25 radio by sending it a series of status checks in quick succession. As there would be many other radios on the system, we need to control when we acquire. Having the system free running on the P25 uplink would yield packets from many radios in many different directions!
I ordered a kit with antennas and a RPi5.
