My application is possible a bit different.
I’m considering using several Krakens at fixed locations within a stadium to locate a “rogue” that is typically stationary but sometimes they are walking around the stadium between segments.
The scenario I imagine would be 3 or 4 Krakens located approx. 120 (or 90) degrees apart within the stadium that are networked on a VLAN.
The operator (me) can see all three or four, but there is no one at any of the Kraken locations, ie remote operation.
The spectrum of most interest is 400-700MHz
The map.kraken.com software and it looks like it has merit if it scales down to hundreds of feet?
I’ve scanned the Forum but don’t see anything.
Has anyone successfully operated in a small environment like a stadium with stationary Krakens and a potentially moving RF source?
Will reflections make the me whole concept unworkable.
Is 400-700MHz too wide a range to operate without respacing the antennas?
The remote network of KrakenSDRs is fine–no operator need be present, as you’ll be using the cloud mapper. One antenna array can support 400 - 700 MHz. The resolution of the array for 400 MHz with a 13cm radius will be 21-degrees. The resolution at 700 MHz with a 13-cm radius will be 12-degrees. So the coverage area of all three nodes on the network will be determined by the smaller resolution.
The intersecting lines of bearing that are seen on the cloud mapper should provide useful results with a tolerance within tens of meters, but if this is being done in an area that creates interference, then more error will be introduced. I can’t say how well the system will work for your scenario, unfortunately. The best that I can say is that, “in theory it should work, maybe”.
A public safety customer was pleased with the results of the cloud mapper in an environment outside of a stadium, though that is not exactly what you described. That’s the closest thing that comes to mind.
Regarding multipath, I think it will be okay. In a stadium you should always have good line of sight to the transmitter (assuming the Kraken antennas are in a good location). Multipath could become an issue if the transmitter gets hidden from LOS for whatever reason.
You can also try to use ATAK. Not as informative as the Kraken App, but each node can see what each other is looking at provided they are all on the same mesh network or VLAN. It works!
