KrakenSDR got wet in gear bag

Yesterday I put up temp antennas (not kraken antennas) on my car and I had the wires ran through the door seal and coiled in a loop with Velcro to the ceiling to keep it out of the way.

My kraken was never involved with any of this, but it was actually below the coiled antenna wire in my gear bag.

The door seal blocked a majority of the water, but I noticed water beads following the lowest hanging part of the coiled wire and it was dripping onto my gear bag.

It turns out that overnight my bag was saturated with water, drop by drop.

The kraken has a foggy surface with only minimal water droplets actually on the surface.

I immediately put it on a tilted fan to dry, then came here to ask how to proceed?

I didn’t want to attempt anything other than airflow to dry it. Rice came to mind, but sounded risky…

Was it totally submerged? The biggest water ingress point will be the small hole where the fan cable enters the unit. If water got in there, the only way to dry it out would be to carefully open the unit and dry it out. But please note that opening it voids the warranty (but so does water damage, so you’re already down that hole).

Be careful when opening it as the thermal pad will be like a glue, holding the enclosure to the PCB. You’ll probably need a flat head to pry it apart. Also be careful with the fan wire which is attached to the enclosure lid and PCB.

It was not submerged, nor soaked, just droplets sticking to exterior of enclosure.

It is enlightening to review what the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 (USA) and the FTC says about manufacturers voiding warranties just because someone opens their device.

While we won’t deny a warranty claim if someone just opened it to have a poke around, it will be denied if there is evidence that opening it damaged it. And opening the KrakenSDR can easily damage it by exposing sensitive parts to ESD, the fan cable can be pulled, SMD parts can be knocked off, the thermal pad will get ripped etc.

So if there is some manufacturing fault, it’s better to just contact us first for a replacement. If there is some clear external user-caused damage, then the warranty is voided anyway, so there is nothing to lose by opening it and trying your hand at a repair.
