can someone explain to me how to use the db value in practice? So should you increase the attenuation close to the transmitter so that the signal is not so strong and the df is better? Or is this irrelevant in practice?

Do you mean the gain setting?
In practice the gain doesn’t really affect DFing because MUSIC is somewhat insensitive to SNR.
However, you definitely do want to have the gain adjusted in such a way that the signal can be received from your starting position.
Once you get closer you might want to turn the gain down IF you suddenly start seeing weird bearings.
What could happen is that another signal overloads and images on top of your signal of interest, which would cause problems. I’ve not seen that happen in practice yet though, but that’s not to say that it could never happen.
